About Madison

We are more than just the capital of Wisconsin.
Madison, and its neighboring towns, consistently rank as top cities in which to live, work, play, and raise a family.  Considered one of the nation's most diverse communities, Madison is famous for its progressive and active politics of inclusion.  Wisconsin was the first state to outlaw discrimination based on sexual orientation.

Madison is a great place for a getaway.
Here in Southern Wisconsin, we have some of the best places to relax and escape from the rest of the world.  As the only city in the world built on an isthmus, Madison's two lakes, Monona and Mendota, provide year-round recreation.  Summertime brings warm, lazy days to water ski and sail, while Winter's freezing of the lakes bring outdoor hockey and ice fishing.  We also have great biking trails, outdoor gardens, and a several parks containing acres of green space.

Culture and day/nightlife add to Madison's vibrant feel, and it all starts on the world famous State Street.  From the university to the capital building, State Street is a car-free thoroughfare that features restaurants, clubs, retail shops, and is the home to one of the nation's largest Halloween parties.  Simply put, State Street IS Madison!

The Overture Center for the Arts is Madison's hub for the fine arts hosting symphonic concerts, opera, theater, and dance by our own performing groups, as well as world-class artists from around the world.  Also featured at the center is a museum that brings paintings, photography, and other exhibits by both local artists, and those from around the world

Gays and lesbian nightlife is also abundant.  Club-5 - featuring 3 distinct areas: the Main bar (dancing), G-Bar (women), and Barracks (leather/levi) - is one of the largest cubs in Madison. The Shamrock Bar, Woof's, and the Hookah Lounge are also great LGBTQ bars to have fun at.  However, you'll quickly find that Madison is a welcoming city and you can comfortably be yourself where ever you may be.

The University of Wisconsin: A world-class university.
There are few places anywhere that can rival the medical, research, law, theater, and overall excellence of the University of Wisconsin.  It is consistently ranked in the top-10 of colleges and universities, and receives thousands of applications year-after-year from potential students from around the world.

The school is also considered one of the nation's LGBT-friendly campuses, as rated by The Advocate.  Progams of study, a large variety of LGBT organizations and events, and even an openly lesbian chancellor (Carolyn "Biddy" Martin) all combine to give LGBT students, faculty and staff an atmosphere that allows them to flourish.

Plus, the sports programs add incredible spirit and vitality to the school's overall reputation.  Led by the school's mascot, Bucky Badger, Wisconsin sports are always the hottest ticket in town.
